REPORTS TO: Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)



LOCATION: Offshore Newfoundland
TYPE OF RIG: DP3 Self Propelled, Semi Submersible MODU, 6th Generation RAM Rig


JOB SUMMARY:  Supervises the drilling operations and associated activities and ensure that they are in accordance with the well program.  Ensure that drilling operations are carried out in a safe, efficient and productive manner.  


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Work experience and demonstrated ability of oral and written communications may be substituted in lieu of formal education
  • Valid Well Control Supervisor Certificate
  • 1+ years experience as Toolpusher on a Ram Rig
  • 2+ years previous experience as Driller on a Ram Rig
  • 2+ years experience on 6th generation dual activity, cyber based semi submersible rig
  • Experience with MH Drillview or similar drilling control systems
  • Knowledge of all technical calculations required for the safe operation of the drilling
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates


  • Ensure the Driller is provided each tour with the Standing Instruction to Driller (SID) that is relevant to the planned operations
  • Monitor the maintenance, repair and installation of all drilling equipment including repair, lubrication, maintenance records, and inventory levels
  • Maintain records of inspections and certification of drilling equipment, tools and tubular
  • Ensure the mud mixing systems and sold control equipment are being monitored constantly and properly maintained
  • Relieve the Driller at the Driller’s console as operational requirements demands
  • Partake in the daily operations meeting  with the OIM, and other rig department heads
  • Monitor the application of the Company Rig Maintenance System (RMS) for drilling department maintenance tasks
  • Review and approve all drilling –related Permit to Work as the responsible person for the task
  • Supervise equipment preparation for impeding drilling operations
  • Assist in planning the job activities of the drilling department and associated activities
  • Ensure that well control requirements are in place according to operational requirements; assist in supervising well-killing operations in a emergency situation
  • Perform all well control calculations (i.e. mud weight increase, initial and final circulating pressures, number of strokes, etc)
  • Assist the OIM in coordinating the activities of third-party personnel responsible for various aspects of the well program and ensure that they understand  policy and procedures related to the task and that the follow safety  processes
  • Review the daily drilling operations report in the Global Management System (GMS) for accuracy and approve accordingly
  • Prepare Requisition Purchase Orders for equipment or parts necessary to keep the drilling operation free of downtime
  • Assist in ensuring that sufficient stock of parts and materials are maintained
  • Assist in the planning, organization and supervision of rig move operations
  • Maintain proper communication with the OIM regarding the progress of drilling and associated operations
  • Recommend adjustments to drilling parameters as necessary to improve the overall drilling operation’s performance
  • Promote and maintain an effective working relationship with other departments, third-party personnel and Customer Representatives
  • Inform the OIM of any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations
  • Actively participate in safety meetings, FOCUS Improvement Process, and all other safety processes in the Safety Management System
  • Incorporate the THINK process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team
  • Participate in the START process
  • Ensure that subordinate personnel are properly trained to perform START observations and monitoring
  • Ensure that DROPS inspections are conducted as per the rig’s DROPS inspection program
  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever an unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed
  • Demonstrate commitment to Company safety policies through the consistent application of leadership and guidance
  • Ensure that effective well control drills are carried out regularly and recorded
  • Ensure that a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained onboard the rig
  • Meet the training requirements according to the applicable training matrix
  • Participate fully in the annual performance appraisal process
  • Mentor, coach, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work at their next job level
  • Provide leadership and motivation to rig personnel.  Ensure that continuous improvement is applied routinely
  • Ensure that all subordinates receive an annual performance appraisal.  Apply accountability for recognition as well as Recommend promotion or disciplinary action up to and including discharge
  • Assist in training to ensure that all personnel are competent to perform their allocated jobs
  • Make recommendation for promotions
