REPORTS TO: Rig Manager


LOCATION: Offshore Nova Scotia

TYPE OF RIG: Semisubmersible, West Aquarius



JOB SUMMARY: Superior authority onboard the unit and manage the unit through his Section Leaders and direct reports and in close cooperation with the onshore organization, customer and third parties.



  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum three years previous experience in a Supervisory position and DP experience
  • 3+ years previous experience in a role with 6th generation semi-sub drilling rig
  • Master (Unlimited) STCW ’95 II/2, Flag State Equivalent, OIM License
  • DP Unlimited ticket required
  • Able to operate software applications as applicable to position
  • Must pass Physical, Drug Screen and Background/Pre-Employment Screening Checks.
  • Complete competency requirements for current position and work towards gaining competency in the next position



  • Effectively control the rig and vessel operations to ensure the safety of the crew, vessel and protection of the environment. Comply with all international and local maritime laws and regulations
  • In charge of all emergency situations onboard
  • Ensure rig compliance with Class, Flag State and regulatory body requirements
  • Hold daily operations meetings with Client Representative and rig department heads to discuss the overall operations of the vessel
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure that the functions of all departments are effectively managed and coordinated
  • Maintain discipline and manage conflict resolution in all matters affecting personnel onboard
  • Oversee and organize the activities of drilling, marine and maintenance departments and ensure company/rig specific procedures are understood and followed by all personnel onboard
  • Establish and maintain a working relationship with the Rig Manager, Shore Based personnel and Client
  • Monitor rig operations. Investigate and report all incidents, abnormal situations and potential hazards to the Rig Manager
  • Maintain daily communication with the Rig Manager on all relevant activities regarding the rig’s operation and requirements
  • Reviews rig performance against unit measures/bench marks/KPI’s. Establishes initiatives to achieve goals and objectives
  • Establishes annual HSE goals and objectives for the rig
  • Actively engage in, lead and facilitate weekly safety meetings
  • Ensure subordinates understand and adhere to requirements of the Company QHSE manual and rig specific procedures
  • Ensure that drills and exercises involve the use of all types of lifesaving, firefighting and other emergency equipment and that they are conducted in accordance with Company and Flag State regulatory requirements and coastal requirements
  • Effectively use all safety and environmental tools employed by Seadrill (4-point check, OBS cards, PTW, etc.)
  • Ensure the emergency response plan for the rig is understood by all personnel onboard
  • Ensure new arrivals receive a full safety briefing and induction on the rig
  • Complete OIM training requirements on a timely manner as per agreed training program
  • Responsible for the rig’s overall compliance with the training matrix and gap analysis
  • Ensure Supervisors mentor, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work in their current job positions and where appropriate coached and prepared for the next position
  • Responsible for reviewing and discussing performance reports with the Client
  • Conduct performance appraisals for subordinates. Recommend promotion, development or disciplinary action
  • Oversee all onboard equipment and systems operation including the application of the Company’s preventative maintenance system
  • Jointly review the results of pressure tests along with DSL and Subsea Supervisor to ensure the BOP is maintained and ready for use
  • Review and update the safety case in consultation with rig and shore-based management
  • Ensure pre-job meetings are preformed according to specific standards
  • Ensure inventory is maintained at necessary levels to support the rig operations
  • Review all rig generated purchase orders. Recommend and/or approve within level of authority and approved budget
