DEPARTMENT: Maintenance


LOCATION: Offshore Newfoundland
TYPE OF RIG: Semi-Submersible


JOB SUMMARY:  Maintain and repair mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment onboard the rig


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • The candidate must have successfully completed a course in practical skills for marine engineers or in diesel mechanics at a recognized training institution, or have an equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Work experience and demonstrated ability of oral and written communications may be substituted in lieu of formal education
  • Experience with MH Drilling equipment with newer control system.
  • 2+ years previous experience in a role with 6th generation semi submersible drilling rig
  • Experience with electro controlled proportional hydraulic
  • Experience with MH HPU for Dual RAM system
  • Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates
  • Knowledge of technical calculations required safe operation of drilling unit
  • Advanced computer skills


  • Perform daily inspections and maintenance of mechanical equipment
  • Organize and promote the Rig Maintenance System (RMS)
  • Carry out periodic maintenance according to the RMS guidelines and coordinate same with supervisors and other department heads
  • Maintain and repair power plants and monitor power distribution-ensure power is available at all times
  • Operate, maintain and repair as necessary the engine cooling water system, lube oil system , and fuel system
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic drilling equipment and tools
  • Assist in maintaining marine equipment, i.e. cranes, thrusters, ballast pumps and valves, auxiliary equipment, etc
  • Ensure that the permit to work and isolation systems are followed
  • Implement the follow-up requirements to audits, as issued by Clients, Regulatory Authorities or rig management
  • Assist in ensuring that all third-party equipment is fit for purpose, certified, correctly installed, and maintained while on the rig
  • Maintain an adequate supply of spares in order to fulfill maintenance requirements and facilitate a safe and efficient operation
  • Supply information to assist in the development of maintenance and repair budget
  • Ensure that service, maintenance and other operational reports are accurate and complete
  • Liaise with the marine department regarding the loading, ordering and use of fuel, potable water, and drill water in consideration of the rig’s stability
  • Inform supervisor and other department head of any technical problems or limitations that may affect the safe operation of the rig
  • Plan and coordinate with other departments prior to any major activity such as rig moves, running and retrieving BOP, etc
  • Carry out classification society survey as part of continuous survey of machinery
  • Communicate equipment problems or breakdown information via direct supervisor to Technical Field Support
  • Incorporate the THINK planning process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team
  • Participate in the START process
  • Ensure subordinate personnel are properly trained in the START process
  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever an unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed
  • Demonstrate commitment to Company safety policies through leadership and guidance
  • Ensure compliance with Regulatory requirements for environmental protection
  • Actively participate in weekly safety meetings and pre-job meetings as required
  • Report any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situation to supervisor and other department heads
  • Ensure a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained onboard the rig
  • Meet the training requirements as per the applicable training matrix
  • Mentor, develop and train crew members to ensure that they are competent to work at their next job level
  • Ensure that all subordinates have the necessary skills and experience to fulfill their assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner
  • Prepare annual performance appraisal for all subordinates
  • Recommend promotions or disciplinary action up to and including discharge
  • Supervise and guide crew members in their On-the-Job Training (OJT) programs
  • Maintain discipline onboard and ensure compliance with Company disciplinary procedures
