JOB SUMMARY:  Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment on board the rig


  • Electrical Engineering degree
  • The  candidate must have successfully completed an appropriate course in industrial electrical technology at a recognized training institution, and apprenticeship experience and/or additional training to the equivalent of that required for a Canadian inter-provincial journeyman’s certificate
  • 2+ years previous experience in a role with 6th generation semi submersible drilling rig
  • Work experience and demonstrated ability of oral and written communications may be substituted in lieu of formal education
  • Experience with Kongsberg K-Chief /K-Pos systems
  • Experience from MH Drilling systems with newer control system (Drill view)
  • High voltage and low voltage experience
  • High voltage certificate H-01
  • MUX experience
  • Experience from DP operations
  • RAM rig experience
  • Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates
  • Knowledge of all technical calculations required for the safe operation of the drilling unit
  • Advanced computer skills


  • Ensure daily inspections and maintenance on electrical equipment are carried out
  • Ensure the permit to work system is in place and followed
  • Participate in the effective management of the Rig Maintenance System  (RMS) and Inventory Control System (ICS) – ensure all records are maintained on a timely basis
  • Carry out periodic maintenance according to the PMS guidelines and coordinate the same with supervisor and other department heads
  • Operate, maintain and repair power generation and distribution equipment, i.e. generators and engine controls, SCR’s, switchgears, transformers, etc
  • Maintenance and repair general rig equipment such as HVAC system, refrigeration plants, power and communication system, lighting, etc
  • Carry out maintenance and repair on electrical components of drilling equipment, i.e. Driller’s console, DC drilling motors and auxiliaries, Top Drive System, drawworks, mud pumps, etc
  • Carry out maintenance and repair on electrical components of marine equipment, i.e. thruster motors and auxiliaries, ballast pumps, control panels, cranes, etc
  • Perform and interpret power calculations, power factor, insulation tests, and positive relay tests as required
  • Study and understand electrical schematics and logic diagrams as required
  • Gather data from instruments, interpret past and present performance to understand trends and ensure problems are solved
  • Maintain an adequate supply of spares in order to fulfill maintenance requirements and facilitate a safe and efficient operation-generate requisitions as required
  • Inform supervisor and other department heads of any technical problems or limitations that may affect the safe operation of the rig
  • Implement the outstanding recommendation from audits, as issued by Clients, Regulatory Authorities or rig management
  • Ensure that reports for repair and maintenance of equipment are accurate and complete
  • Assist in supplying information for maintenance and repair budget
  • Communicate equipment problems or breakdown information via direct supervisor to Technical Field Support
  • Incorporate the THINK process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team
  • Participate in the START process
  • Ensure that subordinate personnel are properly trained to perform START process
  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever an unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed
  • Report any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to the Electronic Supervisor or Maintenance Supervisor and other department heads
  • Actively participate in weekly safety meetings and pre-tour meetings as required
  • Demonstrate commitment to the Company’s safety policies through leadership and guidance
  • Ensure a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained onboard the rig
  • Meet the training requirements as per the applicable training matrix
  • Participate fully in the annual performance appraisal process
  • Mentor, develop and train new crew members to ensure they are competent to work at their next job level
  • Ensure that all subordinates have the necessary skills and experience to fulfill their assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner
  • Recommend promotions or disciplinary action up to and including discharge
  • Supervise and guide crew members on their On the Job Training (OJT) program
  • Maintain discipline onboard and ensure compliance with Company disciplinary procedures
